MSEA slams state on loss of longevity pay

The Maine State Employees Association plans to announce today that it is considering legal action against the state for rescinding longevity pay, which is money awarded to state workers based on their years of service.

Four state workers have filed complaints with the Maine Human Rights Commission, alleging that the action by the Legislature violated the state constitution and amounts to age discrimination, said  Jeff Young, an attorney from McTeague Higbee in Topsham.

"It's arbitrary to balance the budget on the backs of the state's most experienced and dedicated workers," Young said.
